I'm retired. Done. The Airstream, the dog, and a mysterious house to clear out—that's the plan. Except the house keeps revealing secrets, including one that changes everything about what I can afford to build here. The midwife gossip network didn't get the memo about my retirement either, and tools keep arriving whether I want them or not. A consecrated knife. A birth tub. Two men competing to be useful in ways that are equally annoying and...distracting.

A costume designer decides my wardrobe needs an intervention. The desert decides my body deserves an outdoor shower. And Marfa decides I'm done hiding—because every time I try to stay invisible, someone new shows up who sees me anyway.

The Magician claims her tools and puts them to work. But using power draws witnesses—and all y'all aren't letting me disappear. Am I really that needed?

I didn't ask for the tools. I definitely didn't ask for witnesses. But here we are.
